WIN/Gallup International, the world’s leading association in market research and polling, has published its 39th Annual Survey exploring the outlook, expectations, views and beliefs of 68 595 people from 69 countries across the globe. The poll shows that of the 69 countries, popular opinion in 42 countries is opposed to immigration, while it is favourable in 27 countries.

The survey was carried out in Spain by our Member Instituto DYM and published by the prestigious newspaper El Confidential. Spain ranks 5th most immigration friendly country in the EU, even though the percentage of the population against immigration is greater than in favor.

Finland, Sweden, Ireland and Germany are the only four EU states that have a positive index on immigration. (the population that supports is higher than against.) In Spain, only 39% support immigration against 44% that oppose; despite this negative rate of 5% the Spaniards ranks fifth in the European Union when it comes to support immigration.  Globally, Spain ranks 28th out of the 69 surveyed countries.

On this issue the world is split into three groups:

  • The poorest countries (with per capita annual income of less than $ 10,000): The majority (15 of 18) is in favor of immigration of foreign workers in their own country.
  • The middle income countries (with per capita income between $10,000 and $ 35,000 per year): The majority (31 of 34) is opposed to immigration of foreign workers in their own country.
  • The rich countries (with per capita annual income exceeding $ 35,000): This group is divided with favorable (9) and opposed (8).

Globally, the most open countries to the immigration of foreign workers are China (74), Pakistan (65) and Ethiopia (55), while the countries most opposed are Thailand (-65 points), Iraq (-62) and Iran (-59).
